My Computer Has Been Turned Over to Google

My Computer Has Been Turned Over to Google

The service that hosts my blog belongs to Google.  My email is Google.  My desktop search is Google.  My desktop sidebar is Google.  My browsers – both Netscape and Firefox have Google search boxes built in.

Then this past week I found out about Google Calendar.  I really like it!  It was very easy to start using and I like that you can share your calendar (not that I have anyone to share it with at the moment…)

I also have the Google photo manager Piscasa.  I don’t use this program too much – the first time it opened up it found all of my Webshot pictures (screensaver and wallpaper).  That resulted in way too many pictures for me to work with!  I had already invested in Adobe Photoshop Elements, which I use to clean up the pictures I post in my eBay listings – which usually involves cropping, resizing, and stitching photos together (great for front and back covers).  I have had on occasion to use some of the built in photo enhancing tools.  But I haven’t had to time delve into the program any further. So why do we have these powerful programs when we only use so little of their features?

Why so much Google?  They have a way of creating things that are easy to use but also quite powerful.  And the price is right – everything is free!  Fits into my budget!

There is a lot of talk of Google offering an office suite or taking over Open Office.  I have Open Office but haven’t used it too much since I have a copy of Microsoft Office 2000 that still suits my purposes – a few letters now and then and a lot of copy and pasting – and the ability print to fax.  I kept the old fax modem from my Gateway computer (three computers ago). I don’t use it to receive faxes but it is pretty interesting just how many times I have had to fax something out….

One thing I can say about my school work at the University of Phoenix, besides the great education, I got a good set of office tools – Microsoft Office, Microsoft Visio, and Microsoft Project.  So since I’ve invested in these tools – may as well use them.  In fact I type my blog up in word since I have the Blogger for Word plug in (to steal a term from browsers).

It will interesting to see what other products and services Google will offer: a Google browser, Google  high speed internet access, Google computers, Google cell phones,  Google Video (oh shoot – they already have that!), Google banking, Google office suppiies, Google cooking…….

Take care & enjoy,
Florence

I hope you all had a very Happy and Blessed Easter.

Take care & enjoy,

What Happened to Spring?

After a very cool March with temperatures 10-15 degrees below normal, April has started out with temperatures 15 degrees above normal. So we went from running the heater to running the air conditioner in a few short days. There is still hope for spring – normal temperatures are forecast to return mid week.

Yep, it’s spring – our maple tree has flooded our breezeway with its seed. Our puppy, Tyger, who gets into everything chewed up a few of them. She is now three months old and her vet says she is in very good health. She’s big enough now to jump on the couch and to sleep through the night – yippee! Now if we can get her to stop biting and to come when we call….

I’m sort of glad to see March over – I haven’t worked since the job at the factory ended (sigh) the first week of March but I am scheduled to start a 10-day temp job Wednesday. That’s a part time job – hopefully tomorrow I’ll find out whether or not I will be getting a full time job. Ah, the joys of temping…

Our weeping willow tree has been green since mid February and the cherry laurel out front and the red tip bushes along the front fence keep their leaves year round. The oak trees and our Hawthorn are just beginning to bud now that our last freeze date is past. We don’t have any in our yard, but don’t have to go far to see dogwood, azaleas, and wisteria in full bloom. And the pine trees are getting ready to turn everything yellow. Ah, spring!

I found it ever so ironic that we set our clock forward on April Fool’s Day. You can look back on my posting last October about how I feel about daylight savings time…

I have a big run of birthdays this time of year – two sisters, two brother-in-laws, an uncle and a friend. Of course my own birthday is at the end of this month.

Well, enough rambling for now. Until next time --

Take care & enjoy,
